TU/explore

TU/explore is a collaborative game project focused on meaningful interaction and aesthetic detail. The project explores how user experience and hands-on craftsmanship can shape playful, purposeful products.

TU/explore is a hybrid physical-digital educational game designed to help new students navigate the TU/e campus and its resources. Developed in the CBL-P1 project, the game merges interactive gameplay, aesthetic design, and social engagement through a scavenger hunt experience. Players complete tasks, trade items, and unlock clues, all integrated into a custom-built briefcase containing a 3D campus map and customizable panels.

The project emphasized two main expertise areas: Creativity & Aesthetics and User & Society. It involved extensive ideation, material experimentation, and human-centered research. Skills in prototyping, 3D printing, woodcraft, and iterative design were developed by working with materials like yarn, PLA, and reclaimed wood. A focus on user testing guided important design decisions, from improving durability to adjusting gameplay elements for better engagement.

Throughout the process, key attitudes such as reflective thinking, adaptability, and collaboration were strengthened. Embracing the Reflective Transformative Design Process allowed for ongoing feedback loops, continuous improvement, and a deeper understanding of user needs. The project also provided a unique opportunity to take on multiple roles, from analyst to interim team leader, helping refine both technical and interpersonal skills.

TU/explore demonstrates how playful design can serve a meaningful purpose, blending creativity with context-aware decision-making. It stands as a milestone in learning to balance user insight with aesthetic form, and functionality with social value.
